First Fridays in Bend and Vancouver

Bend’s First Friday with Artist Sue Smith

We are thrilled to be displaying the work of Sue Smith for April’s First Friday event in Bend, Oregon.Born in 1928, Sue is a California native now living in Oregon. Sue did not think seriously consider becoming an artist until she turned fifty, and then it became the only thing she wanted to do.  She returned to school, where she focused on abstract painting, and developed an appreciation for the artist’s response to what was happening on the canvas. She earned a degree in Art from Oregon State University – Cascades, as well as the Distinguished Student Department of Art award in 2005. Influenced by historical and contemporary masters, she paints landscapes and still lifes and has participated in numerous national juried exhibitions – her work is in private collections around the United States and Canada

I like the challenge of painting without being trite, a lofty goal considering how many landscapes and flowers have been painted over the centuries.  But a mentor told me to paint the concept not the object. And that is what I try to do.

Sue describes her work as an expression of what she is observing. She paints still lifes and landscapes and is attracted to a moment and the mystery in the environment that generates a narrative. It may be an open expanse of land, or moving water, but Sue finds herself drawn to the idea that someone stood there and observed it before she came upon the scene. It’s the same with still life: seemingly random objects, arranged in a relationship that suggests a human presence  and begs the question, who were they? Why did they leave these objects like this, or wander through this space? Like walking into an empty room and catching the faint sound of a lingering conversation. This is why Smith likes the Spanish Realists, such as Antonio Lopez Garcia, whose work is so intimately detailed and the total opposite of her own. It raises a curiosity, a human connection, things sensed and not seen.

Vancouver’s First Friday with Artist Kara Krieger-Mcghee

Artist Kara Krieger-Mcghee will be joining us for April’s First Friday event in Vancouver, Washington. Kara sees her art as a story of relationships – how light affects color or how a subject interacts with its environment. Sometimes it is a story of exploration with new techniques, ideas or media.

Through storytelling, I hope to inspire creative curiosity in others.

Please join us Friday, April 1st from 5-8pm at our Vancouver Gallery Location (402 W 8th Street) for art, wine and appetizers!

First Friday in Vancouver with Steve Ludeman

Artist Steve Ludeman will be joining us for March’s First Friday event in Vancouver, Washington. Steve’s inspiration comes from the varied scenic beauty and remarkable natural and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest. For many years, he has enjoyed hiking, climbing, kayaking, skiing or backpacking in some of the Northwest’s most wild and scenic places. Now he enjoys telling stories of those outdoor adventures through his landscape and seascape paintings.
Steve grew up in Iowa and was fortunate to live, work and paint in Switzerland, Germany and Australia before settling with his family in Oregon. When not painting en plein air, he creates art while his wife Jean enjoys quilting in their home studio in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains.
Many collectors in the US and overseas have acquired Steve’s art. He is a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Oregon and the Lake Area Artists, Lake Oswego. He is honored to be represented by the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and the Mount Hood Cultural Center and Museum. Steve’s paintings are included in the permanent collections of Timberline Lodge, Oregon (National Historic Landmark) and the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. First Thursday in Portland with Bonnie Junell

Please join us this Thursday, March 3rd from 5-8pm at our Pearl District location  (1321 NW Hoyt Street) for art, live music, appetizers and spirit sampling provided by a Crafted Life!

About our Evening with Bonnie Junell and Crafted Life

We are happy to be displaying the work of artist Bonnie Junell for March’s First Thursday event in the Pearl District. Bonnie grew up in a family of artists. Her grandmother and aunt were always painting, which influenced her love of art. She started drawing as a young child, and her first oil painting class was with her grandmother at the age of 8 – from then on, she was hooked. Following high school, she pursued her desire to become an artist by attending the Portland Commercial Art School, while working at Nordstrom to pay her way through school. After 31 years and living in three states, she ended her career with Nordstom as Vice President within Women’s Apparel. Bonnie retired in 2005 to spend more time with family, and to pursue her lifelong desire as an artist.

As an artist you look at everything through an Artists perspective. When you look at clouds, you think about shape, color and light.

This attention to detail is evident in her work, whether it’s a cityscape or landscape, there is a connection with the subject the viewer can’t miss.
Currently living in Vancouver, Washington with her husband and son, Bonnie is a member of OPG (Oil Painters of America) and NOPG (Northwest Oil paints Guild). Her work can be seen in Gallery’s throughout Oregon and Washington.
