Culver: A Beautiful Area to Live in Central Oregon

With a small population of nearly 1,500 residents, Culver could be overlooked by someone moving to Central Oregon. However, the town is in a gorgeous area, close to the stunning Billy Chinook Lake and The Cove Palisades State Park. It’s also situated between two national forests; the Ochoco National Forest is to the east, and the Deschutes National Forest is to the west. With these beautiful places in the neighborhood, you’ll have plenty to do around Culver throughout the year.
Billy Chinook Lake is one of the main attractions that brings visitors to Culver. The lake was formed by the Deschutes, Crooked, and Metolius rivers, as well as the Round Butte Dam. The dam and lake provide electricity for homes all over the state, including the Culver area.
Surrounded by tall canyon walls, the lake is known for its scenic beauty and comfortable size. It’s more than 7 miles long and has 75 miles of shoreline, giving everyone space to have fun, even in peak season.
The lake is an especially popular destination for fishing. You can catch a wide variety of fish in its waters, from Bull Trout and Rainbow Trout to Kokanee and Small Mouth Bass. Of course, you can also enjoy other water activities, like boating, skiing, and kayaking. You can even rent a houseboat to tour the lake in total comfort.
Best of all, since Central Oregon is a high desert, you’re guaranteed to have sunshine for most of the year. You can go to the lake every week and enjoy blue skies and a lovely sunset.
The lake is gorgeous from above, too. If you go hiking in The Cove Palisades State Park, which surrounds the southern part of the lake, you can get beautiful views of the blue-green water. The state park also has spacious, quiet campgrounds with rental cabins, tent sites, several beaches, and a store with food and supplies. You can take a trail to the canyon rim, watch bald eagles flying, and end the day with a campfire meal or a dinner at Cove Palisades Resort.
If you fall in love with the views from Cove Palisades State Park, why not buy a home overlooking the lake? For example, this lovely 5-bedroom home has incredible lake views in many rooms. You can wake up and see, straight from your bed, a sunrise over the water. Or you can host an evening barbeque on the back deck and watch the stars appear over the canyon.

Culver itself is a nice town to be close to, as well. Despite being a small farming community, it draws a lot of visitors several times a year for events like the Crawdad Festival in August and the annual drag-boat race at Haystack Reservoir.
For the Crawdad Festival, visitors come for the food, festivities, and activities in Culver throughout the day. Events include a scenic morning Bicycle Poker Ride, a fun parade, a Chuck-Wagon Cook-Off, and a big Cajun Crawdad Meal. Between the events, you can browse a range of vendors, play games like Bingo, hang out at the beer garden, and listen to live local music.
The drag-boat race is another popular event that brings both professional and amateur racers to the town. In fact, anyone with a boat can show up for the race. The atmosphere is welcoming and family-friendly, perfect for every experience level. In other words, if you want to feel what it’s like to push your boat to its max speed, here’s your chance!
This positive atmosphere is exactly what you can expect from Culver. Every newcomer to the town is welcomed. It may not be big, but it offers a lot of beauty, comfort, and friendliness.
