Ronda Kanitz – A Cascade Sotheby’s Polo Adventure

INDIO, CA – The modern game of Polo has experienced a resurgence in popularity over the last few years. No longer reserved for the “wealthy and famous” or equestrian aficionados, the sport, although played on horseback, has garnered interest from many highly skilled athletes across the globe, and professionally in 16 countries.

League matches are often held at swanky clubs, offering fields and facilities that rival most professional sporting venues. Spectator popularity is also on the rise, where groups can watch an event field side, while enjoying upscale food and beverage options.

One such club, the Eldorado Polo Club, located in the beautiful Coachella Valley, with its magnificent mountainous backdrop, has welcomed fans and players from around the world for over 60 years. Ronda Kanitz, a broker with Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty, recently had the opportunity to suit up for the Sotheby’s-sponsored team, playing in two Pro Pool tournaments at the famed club.

“I became involved with the sport 3-4 years ago, with the Cascade Polo Club, here in Central Oregon. I attended one of their summer intro clinics, run by Dr. Dan Harrison, and instantly fell in love with the sport. A big horse, little saddle, charging down a green polo field with a mallet – pure heaven!”

Many of the players have some form of equestrian experience. “For me, I appreciate the genuine physicality required from both horse and rider to truly achieve an honest level of performance. It’s kind of like playing hockey, while incorporating a strategy similar to chess but with speed.”

What initially attracted Kanitz to the sport? “Personally, it’s the horses and the camaraderie between the players (and their Polo Ponies), as well as the endless support among players at all levels.”

The Sotheby’s brand made their debut at Eldorado Polo Club this past winter, which, according to Kanitz, is one of the premier settings to take-in a match. Spectators interested in learning more about the “sport of kings” can attend the annual Polo Noir in Portland, OR, this August. View Ronda Kanitz’s listings here.
