Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC has reported that in 2018 its affiliated brokers and sales professionals achieved more than $112 billion USD in global sales volume, the highest annual sales volume performance in the history of the brand. Additionally, 27 affiliated companies surpassed $1 billion USD in sales volume in 2018.
“Experts predicted that 2018 would be a slow year for the global real estate market,” said Philip White, president and chief executive officer, Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC. “Despite the forecast, our talented affiliated companies and their sales associates continued to perform at the top of their game to drive a year-over-year sales volume increase that is truly remarkable. We are going to keep the momentum going in 2019 and we will continue to empower the Sotheby’s International Realty network by offering innovative products, tools, and research to provide best-in-class service.”
The Sotheby’s International Realty brand also reported growth across its global network. At year-end, the network totaled more than 990 offices in 72 countries and territories and more than 22,500 affiliated sales associates worldwide.
In the United States, the Sotheby’s International Realty brand achieved more than $100 billion USD in sales volume in 2018. This year witnessed continued significant growth by the brand’s existing affiliate companies through talent attraction as well as mergers and acquisitions. Most notably, the brand increased its market presence in Essex and the Acton-Boxborough area of Massachusetts; Greater Portland, Oregon; and Nashville, Tennessee. The brand also entered several key new markets last year, namely, Bandon, Oregon; Huntsville, Alabama; the Sandhills Region of North Carolina; Mendocino, Fort Bragg, and Ventura, California.
Outside the United States, the Sotheby’s International Realty brand achieved more than $12 billion USD in sales volume in 2018 while continuing to expand into key markets. In Europe, the brand grew its presence in Menorca and Madrid, Spain; Sylt and Bern, Germany; Kitzbühel, Austria; Zurich, Switzerland; and Slovakia. The brand also sold the rights to the island country of Cyprus. In Asia, new offices were opened in Colombo, Sri Lanka; and Bangkok, Thailand, and agreements were signed to expand into Jakarta and Bali in Indonesia, and Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam and the Maldives. The brand also saw growth in Mexico City, Mexico; the Metropolitan area of Puebla; Valle de Bravo and Malinalco in Estado de Mexico; and Cuernavaca and Tepoztlán in Morelos.
2018 was an impactful year for the brand with the roll-out of new tools and offerings. Sotheby’s International Realty became the first real estate brand to launch and implement a virtual staging augmented reality app, transforming the home buying and selling experience for sales associates and consumers with the launch of Curate by Sotheby’s International Realty℠. Design Vault, a cloud-based ad-builder tool was also unveiled, allowing companies and agents to create advertising, marketing and social assets with ease. The brand entered a custom-publishing relationship with The Wall Street Journal / Barron’s Group to present RESIDE®, a bespoke luxury lifestyle magazine providing affiliate companies around the world a turnkey solution to creating a customized, branded magazine. The publication’s inception also birthed the brand’s new podcast series. In partnership with Inman, an exclusive channel called Leading in Luxury was launched, featuring experts from the Sotheby’s International Realty brand discussing trends, best practices and innovations in luxury real estate.

The Sotheby’s International Realty brand website, sothebysrealty.com, saw another record year with more than 30 million visits, a 13 percent increase year-over-year, with 13 percent of traffic generated from new users. Top searches on sothebysrealty.com in the United States included New York, New York; Malibu, California; and Los Angeles, California. Outside of the United States, the top locations searched were London, United Kingdom; Paris, France; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Lake Como, Italy; and Sydney, Australia.
The Sotheby’s International Realty brand’s affiliated companies and sales associates raised nearly $1 million USD to date for New Story, the brand’s charitable partner and a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The funds raised have gone directly to the construction of new homes in Morelos, Mexico for families who lost their homes in the 2017 earthquakes.
“It was awe-inspiring to visit the families in Mexico whose lives will be forever changed by the generosity of our network,” said White following a recent trip to visit two recently constructed communities in Mexico. “Partnering with New Story as a charitable partner allowed us to extend the services we provide daily: to help people discover homes that allow them to live their best life.”

Our Oregon Coast Brokers continued to give back this holiday by sponsoring local food drives. Offices in Gearhart, Cannon Beach, Lincoln City and Manzanita opened their doors and held festive open houses to gather contributions for the Oregon Food Bank and local food pantries such as the North County Food Bank whose primary purpose is to provide food assistance to people in need from Twin Rocks to the Clatsop County line.
Much fun was had by all as visitors enjoyed refreshments and donated while viewing unique and special property listings from around the world.

Heidi Lael had been renovating historic properties for nearly two decades when she took on her most personal — and epic — project to date. A gorgeous historic Queen Anne Victorian home, built in 1891 on Parrott Creek in Roseburg, had gone back to the bank during the economic recession. Lael, who had longstanding ties to the community, could see the house’s future in her mind: a beautifully renovated destination restaurant. Now, in 2011, it was coming up for auction. Lael didn’t know if she could pull it off, but she knew that she had to try.
“I built my whole business plan around the house before I even owned it,” Lael recalled. “I still have the original drawings detailing my vision.” Lael won the bidding war, and purchased Parrott House that year. Then the real work began. “When I bought it, there were four-foot-tall weeds all around the house. The lower level windows were boarded over, after they’d been broken out by vagrants. There was no kitchen. And the whole house was gutted.”
In order to try to recoup some of their investment, the previous owners had scraped the home clean of everything, from doorknobs to light fixtures to the fireplace mantel. But the house had good bones, and the previous owners had completed dry rot removal and wiring improvements. And then there was Lael herself, who came to the project with plenty of skill and experience.
After graduating high school in Roseburg, Lael had gone on to cut her teeth on home renovation on the East Coast, in New York City and New Jersey, before following the market to Las Vegas and renovating properties there. In the early 2000s, Lael’s mother had been working in real estate in Roseburg, and told her daughter to come back home and buy and renovate properties in the Umpqua Valley. It seemed like the right move, so home Lael had come. “I bought my first house in Myrtle Creek in 2003, and had bought several more in Roseburg’s historic districts by the time of the Parrott purchase.”
Now, more than ever before, the whole community was watching. Lael began scouring secondhand stores and building supply stores for materials to renovate the Parrott House. Astonishingly, she found the home’s original fireplace mantel in Aurora at Aurora Mill, an antique store. The owner agreed to sell it back to her for the price he’d paid the home’s original owners. “I had put everything into the auction—I was totally cash poor,” Lael said. “I paid him layaway for a year.”
The renovation took years. But to gaze upon the completed product today, it’s impossible to say that all of the effort didn’t pay off. Almost all of the details of Lael’s original vision in those early drawings she still has have come to fruition. The Parrott House opened in January of 2017 as a resplendent restoration of its original glory, and a farm-to-table fine dining destination on par with any in Oregon.
The original home houses two dining rooms, decorated in eclectic elegance. The kitchen is upstairs—a compromise so that most of the home’s space could be available to guests. An interior bar is distinguished by a madrone tree that rises from the back wall, as well as more hip-meets-historic décor.
Perhaps the property’s real gem is the semi-detached pavilion out back. Massive reclaimed timbers form the structure that is otherwise entirely glass. Lael’s aesthetic is to use as much reclaimed and recycled material as possible. “The beams came from the original Rainier Brewery in Seattle,” she explained. The room is expansive and gorgeous, marked by a 110-pound crystal chandelier hanging overhead.
Through the glass, guests see a brick and stone pizza oven outdoors to one side of the pavilion. To the other side is an outdoor patio and an outbuilding, which was originally the washhouse and is now a bourbon bar. “Originally I was thinking wine, but bourbon is so big right now,” said Lael. “And the rustic shed was perfect for it.” The dark and moody interior holds 130 bourbons, as well as vintage bar mirrors and stools.
A delicious French-European menu draws on produce and products from local farms and vendors. Menu highlights include heirloom tomato carpaccio, wild mushroom risotto and pizzas from the brick oven. The site can host weddings and events, under a lovely white trellis reclaimed from nearby attraction Wildlife Safari.
The Parrott House shines again, and Lael couldn’t be more delighted with the response she’s received from the community. “People just love this old house. When they walk in and cover their mouths in surprise, that’s the reward right there.”
Moses and Tennesee Parrott built the Parrott House in 1891. Moses Parrott was one of the finest shoemakers on the West Coast. The couple raised ten children in the home, also becoming the founders of the Roseburg Academy, a private school for children. Their youngest daughter, Rosa, was a schoolteacher her entire career, and lived in the family’s home until the 1950s. There is a photo of her in the Parrott House living room near the fireplace.

The history of Ilwaco, a small but active port on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula, is built into an historic home that sits high on a hill. When the house was under construction in the early 1930s, a nearby Civil War-era fort was being decommissioned, and the staircase from the captain’s quarters was dismantled and rebuilt in the house. It’s just one detail in the house that is filled with character and history.
“Finding this much usable space and a well-maintained property in a home of this age, in this location, is a real challenge,” said Cascade Sotheby’s broker Heather DeFord. “It is one of the premiere homes in the area.” When the Ellises moved in, the bones of the house were there, Marge explained, but it did need updates. Richard and Marge were careful to preserve the integrity of the home and its craftsman style.
“I like traditional builds,” said Marge. “No matter how they build today…it just doesn’t have the bones that this does.” They started by chipping away at the paint that had sealed the original large picture windows shut, breathing new life into the home. They took the time to find the era-correct replacements for Art Deco style chandeliers and sconces that were found throughout the home.
They did preserve the original maple hardwood flooring that was found throughout the first floor and the second-floor landing. Other details like glass doorknobs, ample built-ins, a gas fireplace and French doors that lead into the dining room enhance the historic charm. Seven years ago, they remodeled the kitchen. “We worked really hard to make sure the kitchen blended in with the house,” said Marge. Matching the dark DeWils cabinets to the wide wood trim found throughout the home made the modern kitchen blend seamlessly with the traditional style of the home. They added stainless steel appliances and granite counters as well as an island to the layout for an efficient cook’s dream. They also brought back the booth seating in a breakfast nook of the kitchen that was taken out at some point in an earlier remodel, restoring part of the home’s original history.
The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is primed for its next chapter. There is an unfinished basement that could be turned into another living space. The large, unfinished attic, which is lined with large wooden beams salvaged from shipwrecks in the area, could be turned into a master suite. Outside, a recently added Malarkey roof is constructed to withstand heavy coastal storms. Fruit trees dot the large yard, and there is a detached two-car garage with more storage space. Fresh landscaping and white exterior paint add to the 4,500-square-foot home’s curb appeal.

GEARHART, OR – Most of us have that one special memory from our youth about our time at summer camp. Such an experience still existed up until late August of this year, when Breakaway Lodge closed its doors for the last time. Operating under the Christian faith-based organization Young Life, the Breakaway Lodge, providing life-transforming experiences for young people, held its annual camp season from May-September for over 50 years. While many are saddened over its closing, they are surely grateful for all of the memories which still reverberate within the Lodge walls. Built in 1920, Breakaway Lodge was placed on the market at the conclusion of the 2018 Young Life Summer Camp Season.
