Laurie Balmuth Bio
Laurie Balmuth was born and raised in Connecticut and spent much of her early life in Maine. She moved to Oregon in 1988 and in 1994 graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland with a BFA double major in Painting and Printmaking. She divides her time between Oregon and Baja Sur, Mexico.
“My paintings flow directly from inside me to the painting surface” says Balmuth about her work.
“Defining the meaning of each painting is completely fluid. I make them as an antidote to literalism so they aren’t about an image so much as how visual information is decoded. I am deeply wedded to the driving force of seeing and making.. The objective of each work is to realize and make real that which is vague and felt or only glimpsed. I extract shapes that become other shapes; interlocking, separating, merging and transforming. Honesty in image making comes from emotion and the need to paint. Craft comes from inside a particular person. A painting is my perfect world, made honestly and exactly to my specifications.”
